Art Mirek - Mirror on Warren
Introducing the Contenders Replay
This is an update of an article published on GoWarrenCity.Com this past August. In the original article I grouped the Candidates for the November City election into three defined political "Slates".
As the Election draws closely to the forefront, I have received corrections from two Candidates who requested they be identified as Independent Candidates for the November 6th election. It must be noted that this list is not an endorsement by this writer or GoWarrenCity.Com. It is based solely on the Candidate's Campaign literature, discussions with some of the Candidates and remarks made by those involved in the Election.
The result is an educated guess of who the Candidates would most likely support for Mayor, Clerk and Treasurer. Because the City Government is Non-Partisan I've grouped the contenders into Group One, Group Two and the Independents. Incumbents to an Office are identified by (I) following their last name.
Group One
MAYOR
James R. Fouts
CLERK
Michael J. Wiecek
TREASURER
Carolyn Kurkowski Moceri
COUNCIL
Mary M. Kamp
Gloria Sankuer
Scott C. Stevens
David Koury
Jackie Debrowsky
Patti Hatfield
Steven G. Warner
Joe Peters, Jr. (Write-in Candidate)
Group Two
MAYOR
Richard Paul Sulaka
CLERK
Paul Wojno
TREASURER
Mark A. Steenbergh
COUNCIL
Kathy Vogt (I)
Donna Kaczor Caumartin (I)
Patrick Green
Robert Boccomino
Marilyn Ann Marchwinski Morrocco
Mark Liss
Ron Robinson

Again the above information is just a guess and based after walking many miles through the City, knocking on doors, talking to people, attending Candidate forums, distributing my literature and chance meetings with many of the other Candidates. AFTER the Primary election it all became obvious, at least to myself, who was supporting who. Part of my methodology was to match the Candidates for Clerk, Treasurer and Council Candidate to the Mayoral Candidates. Therefore it was necessary to define the Mayoral Candidates themselves:
Jim Fouts has always been a hands on person who wants to help homeowners and neighborhoods. He has spent over 25 years on the Council. During most of those years he also taught Government to High School Students. He is that rare Politician who communicates with the Tax Payer. He encourages folks to get involved in the political process. If you have watched or attended a Council meeting where the Council was to approve appointments by the Mayor you witnessed Jim Fouts trying to open the nominations to everyone. Jim Fouts can be defined as a Crusader for good government. Richard Sulaka has over 20 years of experience in public service beginning as an appointed member to the planning Commission. He was elected to two terms as a City Councilman and two Terms as the Warren City Clerk. In the last election he ran unopposed. In the early days he was a small business owner and later a Real Estate Broker. As someone who worked as an Election Inspector under Richard Sulaka I can honestly say that he cares for people too. He is a very popular Clerk and the majority of those who have worked as an Election inspector for the City of Warren admire him because he has always treated us with respect. Richard Sulaka can be defined as a person who motivates people.
Because of their experience in City Government both men are qualified to be Mayor. What will insure the success of our new Mayor will be those who are elected along with him. In order to successfully run the 3rd largest city in Michigan it will be necessary to have all our elected officials on the same page.
